The weed eater does not quite do the job right, but I still highly recommend it.
I was going to purchase a Craftsman edger, but after seeing all the bad reviews, I decided not to go with gas and bought the Edge Hog after seeing all the reviews on Amazon. It propagates by spreading tough, vine-like runners. However, it has a few shortcomings. My results with it have been excellent. Got tired of edging by hand or with a string trimmer, liked the Amazon price and the maker. Assembly was easy. Therefore, it won't work close to obstacles since you can't reverse direction.
This is a powerful easy to use edger. I wasn't even under much of a load at the time and I was using a very heavy duty (10 gauge) extension cord. Another thing is the motor is next to the blade, so the weight is on the ground, NOT on your shoulder!
My husband had it set on the 1inch mark and it easily, I mean EASILY cut thru the grass. It easily cuts the edge around your curbed lawn and with little noise or fuss. I would probably have purchased a more expensive gasoline model if our yard was much larger. Try cutting a circle in a piece of wood with a hand-held circular saw and you will understand what I mean.
All of my neighbors are jealous of my perfectly manicured lawn, Very easy to use. Cleaning it out was a piece of cake. It has an edge guide that's somewhat useless since it doesn't go down very much past the base of the wheels. Last year we moved to a new house on a corner lot, and my battery powered weed whacker was just not up to the task.
The unit was DOA as they forgot to put the spring into the height adjustment to hold it in place. A breeze to clean. Augustine lawn.
The Edge Hog was very easy to assembly and adjust. Once I got that part out of the way I feel it will be very easy to use since the grass will never be overgrown like that ever again. There is adequate power in the unit. The soil must be relatively dry or clumps of dirt stick in the edger.
