What's The Point Of Having Canvas Photo Prints?

By Cathy T. Tocco

Photo paper isn't the only photo material out there; canvas photo prints are growing more and more popular. "What reason is there for making canvas photo prints?" you might ask. There are actually a number of reasons. While paper is a more widely used photo medium than canvas, there are perks to canvas photo prints. The fabric base adds sumptuousness and complexity. Its rough texture makes a museum piece out of a regular photograph. This is a great touch if you're giving someone a photo print as a gift or using one to decorate your own home.

Also, if you're going big, you'd better go with canvas photo prints. Paper doesn't last quite as long as canvas, and it's thinner and more fragile. What's more, ink doesn't soak too well into photo-grade paper; it tends to float on top, which increases the chances of your photograph fading. To keep it from fading, you need to have a protective covering - either glass or a chemical finish. You also have to mount it, which can be tricky when you're dealing with a big photograph. Canvas, on the other hand, absorbs ink, making your picture more durable, and it can be displayed very easily.

You can choose among cotton canvas, polyester canvas, and a blend. Cotton canvas is made from natural fibers, while polyester canvas is made up of plastic fibers. Pure polyester tends to be cheaper, but the absence of natural materials makes for less absorbency. Cotton, on the other hand, isn't quite as cheap, but it absorbs ink more easily and consequently remains bright longer. A cotton-poly blend is the best way to go, as you get the best of both worlds, so be sure you find a printer who provides it. Make sure, also, that the canvas you use has a neutral pH rating, to ensure your artwork stands the test of time.

As a rule, printers are happy to stretch and frame or mount your canvas photo prints for you. Another possibility is to buy them rolled and treat them yourself. It's better to buy them mounted, unless you have experience working with canvas. Remember, the employees are masters at stretching, framing, and mounting canvas. Unless you have a similar level of expertise, you should leave the stretching to the skilled professionals.

Whether the products of your professional photo printing are destined for your wall, your best friend's wall, or an art gallery somewhere, consider getting them done on canvas. The beautiful final product is worth going the extra mile.
