I was having a conversation with some buddies in the bar a fortnight gone about which time piece they wore.
One was wearing a Rolex watch although he wouldn't admit if it were an original or a imitation. The other mate, a female, was wearing a watch brand I had never heard of. And the third chum was wearing a Tag Heuer.
Now brands like Rolex and Tag Heuer are not cheap designer watches for ladies or men. These products will set you back above £1000.
Personally speaking I haven't worn a watch for approximately 10 years. Maybe it is a link with me being a sports person. The perpetual hassle of taking a watch off and on and being worried about it being damaged in stormy conditions.
So I questioned my male friends about why they'd purchased such expensive brands. My friend Richard explained that wearing a branded Rolex watch was a male symbol of status to display success. Very similar to parading around in a Ferrari or Porsche vehicle, it was his way of displaying his success.
My second male pal was not quite so explicit in his explanation. He described the way the Tag Heuer was known for its wonderful hand made designs and their superb perfection in time keeping with their movement technology.
My female friend told me that she had about six or 7 unique watches. These watches were purchased for different occasions, different clothing outfits as well as some watches being presents on her 21st and 30th birthdays. She told us how she was attracted to the dimensions of the watch and the capability for the watchstrap to go with certain dresses or certain social events she attended.
So I've fairly much come to the conclusion that men wear big brand name watches as a status symbol whilst women wearing them as designer accessories. Whilst I appreciate this is a generalisation, I don't think it's far off the mark.
For me, I'll stick to using my iPhone or asking my well off pals to tell me the time.
