Should Graduates Think About The Future More?

By Louise Adams

A recent study has found that only 19%of students considered their careers after university before starting their courses. This new finding is quite worrying, particularly with the amount of graduates that are now unemployed.

A study of 1730 students has discovered that most students did not put much thought into the job roles their degree might lead them to before they embarked on their first year of study. Once they had begun their course this seemed to change pretty quickly.

A total of 79% of first year students begun to consider their options once they has begun their course.

The students tended to begin thinking about their options fairly quickly during their first semester at university.

The students were divided when asked what affect this had on them with 17% saying it had motivated them to prove themselves whereas 18% said they had begun feeling depressed.

When questioned about their biggest worried when searching for a role 69% concluded that the competition levels put them off and 55% said they were worried that there simply wasn't enough jobs.

A quarter of students genuinely believed that employers were too picky and the criteria for getting a job was too harsh. This suggests that the students thought that they did have the adequate skills and talent but felt it was difficult to get themselves noticed.

The recession was also blames for making the students feel less confident and only 4% said they were still feeling positive about their job prospects after they graduate. 11% of students said they had hope that they would feel more positive in the future.

Where salaries were concerned the graduates all seemed to feel fairly negative, 54% said they felt very depressed about their options.
