The Types And Applications Of The Metal Gasket

By Rahul Talwar

Gaskets are a kind of mechanical seal. A gasket fills the area between mating surfaces, so as to prevent any leakage of fluid from or into the objects that are joined when they're subjected to compression. The gasket could be of many types, and can be cut from a variety of sheet materials. Common varieties are the metal gasket, rubber gasket and those made from elastomers.

Gaskets find uses in a diverse range of fields. From grand packaging to steam systems, their applications are seemingly endless. Malaysia is home to many manufacturers who fabricate gaskets of the highest quality for all kinds of requirements.

Common materials from which gaskets are constructed range from paper to felt, silicone to synthetic rubber, fiberglass to metal, and a variety of polymers such as Teflon. Gaskets made out of each of these materials are further subdivided into varied kinds. The metal gasket for instance could be corrugated, flat, single-jacketed or double-jacketed.

The corrugated metal gasket is used in high pressure systems which are subject to a wide range of temperature. It is a circular or irregularly shaped metal disc that has been corrugated deeply. It is commonly used within the seal of water, oil and chemicals. Steam and gas may also be sealed with this type of gasket. One can find many suppliers for it in Malaysia.

A solid metal gasket can either be flat or machined. They've a high degree of mechanical strength and supply good thermal conductivity. Moreover, they're resistant to chemicals and high temperature pressure. They're less resilient in comparison with other types, used primarily in cylinders, heavy presses and similar narrow-faced applications.

Metal profile gaskets are suited to grand packaging applications and other similar applications which demand using wider gaskets. In places with smooth flange faces and sufficient bolt load, flat metal gaskets are ideally used. Suppliers in Malaysia manufacture virtually all kinds of sizes, although small sized are generally used.

The single jacketed metal gasket is suited to those applications which are subject to moderate temperature and pressure. It comprises a soft filler material (heat resistant) encased in a sturdy metal jacket. Compression causes the jacket to flow, and this forms the seal. The filler acts as a compensation for flange imperfections apart from imparting resilience to the gasket. This sort of gasket is particularly suited to narrow-faced flanges that allow only light bolting.

A double jacketed metal gasket is ideal for high temperature/ pressure applications. In this case, the filler material is completely encased in a two-piece jacket, as opposed to the partial enclosure found in the single jacketed type. The required resilience that ensures proper sealing is provided by the filler, while the double jacketing offers protection by resisting heat, pressure and corrosion. Boilers and heat exchangers which require ample bolting make use of these gaskets.

The kind of gasket required for grand packaging would differ from the type demanded in a high pressure steam system. Nevertheless, all kinds of specs are available among both on-line and offline retailers in Malaysia, and that too at affordable price ranges.
