Tips For Entering Screenwriting Contests

By Dustin Faulkner

For screenwriters the struggle to get their work recognized is worth it in the end if they are successful. Nobody could imagine the trepidation they feel when they get their mail, to fear that it might contain another rejection notice to add to the hundreds they already got. Once in a while though, they get lucky and find that some editor or producer had liked their work. But for the common writer, one of most reliable way to get their work recognized is to submit it to a contest.

There are numerous contests being held around the world at this very moment. Winning a contest has plenty of benefits, such as getting the prize money, landing some contracts and maybe even getting hired by some production company. Entering plenty of contests is a writer's best bet towards getting some recognition in their field.

It's quite easy to look for screenwriting contests, you just need to boot up your computer and search the web. It's very important that you adhere to the rules and guidelines set by the contest organizer. Check if you have the proper qualifications. Some contests narrow down their participants by accepting entries only from unpublished writers. Just think of the hassle if you discover you've entered a contest you don't even qualify for.

Make sure you're aware when you have to submit our entry. Don't even consider being late on your submission, you can forget about the contest if you do. If you are limited to a certain number of words or pages then make sure your work follows that. Formatting is also important, so make sure you used the right format for your work.

Winning in these contests just might be the step that will lead to your success. It is also a way for you to make some money from your initial works. Contest organizers usually ask established personalities to support these events. They are providing an opportunity to get their hands on fresh materials. Use this knowledge to your advantage so you can get your foot in the door.

You do need to be careful about screenwriting contest scams though. Some of them will ask you to submit an entry fee. Better avoid these kinds of contests because they might just be stealing your money. Any legitimate contest for screenwriting should be free for contestants to enter.
