Testing Mobile Applications

By Jason L. Beanster

Mostly 50 MB sizes are just enough for any type of android applications. One of the famous android game Angry Birds Rio has got the file size of 19 MB. However there are a few types of apps e.g. high-quality 3D interactive games maintaining superior 3-D graphics, audio, and video which requires more resources.

Before I proceed, It must be clear that Android apps were actually free to go past the size limit (50 MB) earlier also; never the less designers had to host the data unassisted.

Traditionally, when user attempt to find such superior apps or game from Android market, after downloading the core app, user is urged to set up additional files to complete the download. These additional files needed to be hosted by developers .

Evidently the file size of each of these additional files (which is often in GBS) were not considered while showing the app size of that game/app on Android Market.

Hence frequently even a user may feel fooled as for app/game of 10 MB (as per app size shown in android market) we should install additional 1-2 GB of this particular data after installing the core apk.

Yet downloading this additional data were often leading to expiry of the refund time. (Google presents a 15 min Refund window for paid apps. Whenever you download an app and also you uninstall within 15 mins, you can automatically obtain the refund on your purchased price.

Though for a much bigger apps or games, downloading the excess data were often inducing expiry of the refund time as downloading in this additional data may takes several minutes.)

What's Great Now subsequent to this update? As Google has improved the Android app size restriction from 50 MB to 4GB to upload in Android Market, these additional files will now be hosted on Google's server and developers will not have to have these supplemental files on their own expenses on some third party server.

As there will be much less control on the app size, we can assume to have some more good value application in Android Market. As most of that data can be fully enclosed into the APK and the expansion file, user will be able to see the whole size of the app in Android Market right before having to pay and downloading it.

Most Curiously, unlike earlier, the refund window will begin only when you have installed all the files. For Most newer devices, the expansion files will be immediately discovered when you download the core app from android market. However for more aged devices Google will offer you a downloaded library (developer tool) to download the expansion file. In short this update from Google is favourable for each Developers and Users.
